Wahkiakum PUD Commission Votes to Discontinue Fluoridation of Cathlamet Water System

CATHLAMET, Wash. — June 2, 2026 — The Wahkiakum Public Utility District Commission has voted to discontinue the addition of fluoride to the Cathlamet water system. The change will take effect on June 5, 2026.

The Commission approved the action following discussion and review of operational, financial, and policy considerations related to the fluoridation program. Beginning June 5, fluoride will no longer be added during the water treatment process serving customers of the Cathlamet water system including the Town of Cathlamet and Puget Island.

Wahkiakum PUD will continue to meet all applicable federal and state drinking water quality standards and will maintain its commitment to providing safe, reliable, and high-quality drinking water to its customers.

Customers with questions about fluoride and dental health are encouraged to consult with their healthcare providers or dental professionals. Residents seeking additional information about the change may contact Wahkiakum PUD during normal business hours.

"The Commission appreciates the public's interest in this issue and remains committed to transparent decision-making regarding the operation of the district's water system," the Commission stated.
